At our last outing to the frozen lake ice track, the stock servo in the LaTrax Prerunner finally gave up the ghost 👻 I figured it was a matter of time as I’ve replaced the included servos in all of our other ready-to-run vehicles: Slash & SCX24. I had a feeling this was inevitable.
I started with this video put together by the fine folks here in town at Dollar Hobbyz:
Rather than making a snow track in the back yard this year, I decided to venture out and try some ice racing on a lake. There’s a group called MN R/C rally, rallycross and ice racers on Facebook and they create and maintain an ice track on Pickerel Lake in St. Paul.
Before we would visit the lake I wanted to make some studded tires for my daughter’s 1/18 LaTrax Prerunner.
[Read more…]I picked up a HobbyMate HB298T AIO FPV Camera for my Tiny Whoop. It’s discontinued, which is a shame, but you might be able to find them on eBay. I got it because of this very specific feature most micro-FPV cameras don’t have: Built-in Microphone.
BUT… I haven’t installed the addition to my FPV goggles that will allow me to receive and record sound yet. Video however is working nicely and I look forward to adding audio to the mix.
[Read more…]When I was looking to get my daughter her first RC car, I eyed the Dromida Wasteland series of vehicles. That line is discontinued, but you can still occasionally find them at local hobby shops or eBay.
After researching them, I found out they have a combined ESC & receiver which would not easily allow me to replace the transmitter & receiver for a left handed version.
So when I saw a Dromida Wasteland truck body show up on eBay, I snagged it. The Dromida Wasteland and LaTrax Prerunner are both 1/18 scale and have similar wheelbases – 165mm and 179mm respectively. Being the same scale means the bodies should be proportional and more importantly swappable, albeit with some tweaks. The 14mm difference in wheelbase is about 1/2 inch, but I figured I could kitbash these two into one to make it work.

Mostly because of wives, home owners associations, neighbors, etc. 🙂 But up here in America’s snow boot, anyone can build a temporary off-road track out of snow instead of dirt.
[Read more…]In the winter it can be hard to get out and play all of the time. We built some chained tires to tackle the snow. Unfortunately, January 2019 has been more ice than snow, and the polar vortex kept us inside for over a week. But we can still have fun driving RC inside. So how do we get these high speed vehicles from wrecking everything in the house? Training mode & drift tires!
